ASTM D4060 Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Organic Coatings by the Taber AbraserASTM Inter...
ASTM D4060 is a widely used American standard test method to evaluate the abrasion resistance of organic coatings applied on flat rigid substrates such as metal panels. The test adopts the Taber Abraser to create controlled rotary friction on the coating surface.
During the test, the coated sample is mounted on a rotating platform. Two abrasive wheels (commonly CS‑10 or CS‑17) with specified load (typically 1000g per wheel) press against the coating. The specimen rotates while the wheels slide and wear the coating surface.
Operators can stop the test at preset revolutions or when the coating is worn through. The mass loss of the sample is measured to calculate the Wear Index, which quantifies coating abrasion performance. Lower wear index means better wear resistance.
This standard is commonly applied to paints, powder coatings, floor coatings and other organic finishes. It is similar but not technically equivalent to ISO 7784‑2. All SI units are primary except coating thickness expressed in mils
