ISO 7784-2 is an international standard specifying the test method to evaluate abrasion resistance of paint and varnish coatings. It uses two loaded, freely rotatable, eccentrically mounted abrasive rubber wheels acting on a rotating coated specimen.
The flat coated sample is fixed on a rotary platform. Two abrasive rubber wheels with defined load press against the coating surface. As the specimen rotates, the rubber wheels generate continuous rotary abrasion on the coating.
The test can be terminated at preset revolutions or when the coating is worn through to the substrate. The abrasion performance is assessed by measuring mass loss of the specimen after the test. Lower mass loss indicates better wear resistance.
This standard applies to organic coatings on rigid flat substrates, including liquid paints, powder coatings and floor finishes. It adopts the same Taber-type test principle as ASTM D4060, but they are not technically equivalent due to differences in abrasive wheel composition and calibration rules.
